The fiction called space and time

I call this blog Outside the Reality Machine because the machine produces space and time—the continuum people accept as the final word on existence.

But as every artist knows, there are many spaces and times—a potentially infinite number. Why do you think painters began studying the ways perspective could be shown on the canvas?

Why is there this thing called theater, which has a stage?

Your own future is a space and time that hasn’t yet been created…and who is going to create it?

The 50 imagination exercises I include in my collection, Exit From The Matrix, involve creating space/time, for the simple and natural reason that imagination is the source of unlimited spaces and times.

When I began visiting art museums in New York, in 1960, this was the revelation. Every painting was its own continuum. I was touring worlds upon worlds. To say it was refreshing would be a vast understatement. It was basic spiritual therapy. My whole life underwent a regeneration.

What is the reply to things as they are? Art. Invention. Imagination. Thus, new space and time.

The root for the English world “imagination” is the Latin word “imago,” meaning image. I can’t find a further breakdown into more basic roots. But I can’t help thinking how interesting it is that you can separate “imago” into “I” and “mago,” or “magic.”

I-magic.

On the other hand, the word “reality” traces back to the Latin word, “res,” which means “thing.” There is no explanation of where things come from. Things are just there.

With imagination, though, we understand that many things and spaces and times can be, and are, invented.

Contrast an allegiance to things as they are with an allegiance to things that can be created—or, more properly, to that which creates things: imagination.

This is not abstract or theoretical. This is about life.

Consider: You walk through a city of many narrow streets. Side by side, as far as you walk, you see little theaters. You enter them. Plays are in progress. You sit down, you watch the actors on stage. You visit a hundred theaters. Finally, you enter one, and the lights are on and the stage is bare. You’re the only person there. You wait. You sit down. An hour passes. Two hours. Nothing happens. And then you realize…this is your theater. You will decide what happens on this stage. You will make this space and time.
