Leaving Matrix: the Zen of Zen

Language, desire, and mysterys

Note: While preparing my collection, Exit From The Matrix—which includes more than 50 imagination exercises I designed to open up the space of possibility and wide-ranging creative power—I made many pages of notes. This article is taken from those notes.

A system is like a dream that always plays out the same way. Start to finish.

A robot would be a system.

There are a whole lot of two-and-three wish people in this world. Grant them their wishes and they’re done.

And that’s because they’ve made desire into a kind of system. It’s tight. You walk in there and give them what they want and boom, they’re done. They’ve really got nowhere to go after that.

This is interesting—because it suggests—and you might want to chew on this for a while—that there is another version of desire that isn’t so tight and bounded…and if that is so, we are looking at desire as possibility.

People tend to recoil from this. They want the Cadillac, and they want it now. They want the prettier fingernails, the new nose, the butt implants, and the island in the Pacific with the yacht.

At least that’s what they think, because they don’t have them, and they tend to define their future in those terms. So they’re yearning and longing.

But what if there is a whole other space, a whole other future that isn’t so simple? And what if its uncertain shape makes it even more attractive?

What if the poem you’ve read a hundred times, the one you never quite understood, is the one you admire the most? The one that sends your mind and imagination off in so many directions.

And what if this has something to do with what magic is really all about, and is a kind of magic that normally escapes attention? What if magic can be like this, can be a road with thousands of forks that take you into undiscovered territory you’ve never dreamed of before?

What then?

What if our programmed sense of what reality is, the precision and the definition and the thing-ness, is a diversion from what, underneath it all, we want?

What if the most subtle illusion about reality is the conviction that reality is an absolute IS separated from an absolute ISN’T?

What if that keyboard on your computer, which is so THERE on your desk, is only one KIND of there-ness? And another kind of there-ness is implication-not-fully-realized…and although you’ve always been quite sure you want the THERE of that keyboard and the yacht and the villa, you also want the implication-not-fully-realized…and you want it so much that it would fulfill the requirement of magic?

In other words, for all this time, desire has been, for you, a kind of closed system that is leak-proof and bulletproof, and that’s why it has remained unfulfilled.

Let’s say there are levels of desire. Level One is those things you obviously want. Level Two involves the exploration of undiscovered territory.

Analogy: you’re an archeologist, and all your life you’ve wanted to dig up a lost city—and then you do. There it is, all laid out in the desert. It’s what every archeologist is supposed to want. You’re supposed to feel a sense of finality. This is it. This is the realization of your prime wish. But instead…

You feel boundaries. You feel you’re inside something that has walls. You feel there must be something more.

And then you uncover, in a sealed repository, a dozen volumes of writing in a language you’ve never seen before. This language is built on mysterious connections that seem to be untranslatable.

Instead of hundreds or thousands or millions of nouns that name things; instead of verbs that show how these nouns are acting on objects; instead of that familiar pattern; you see this old civilization approached reality in a completely different way:

There are hundreds of words that refer to “flying.” Some of these words are involved with flying into other people’s consciousness and seeing the alive, electric energies that flow and move there.

Some of these words mention persons having views of the earth from above and at ground level simultaneously.

Some of these words refer to enormous poems that were written centuries earlier, and these poems were, for a time, ARBITRARILY frozen in mid-flight. Short selections were extracted and used to form the basis of organized religions, whose leaders were bent on control of populations—and then there were reformations and revolutions, and the original wild and free poems were sprung from their graves and brought out into the light again, and the religions fell and disappeared…

And now you, the archeologist, feel something bursting up in your own mind, a desire to explore THIS and go where it leads. You feel energized and galvanized in a way that far exceeds your experience of digging up the city and seeing it laid out end to end.

You sense implications that have no limits.

You wake up from a dream in which reality was defined and cataloged and shaped into systems.

For the first time, you understand how limited that dream was.

You realize you have been hearing the sounds of robots marching from horizon to horizon—and now those sounds are gone.

Simultaneously, you now experience a gorgeous peace and a Niagara of many unnamable cascades of desire.

The premise of limited desire is gone.

You are UNDENIABLY alive.

Finally, you see why you’ve never fit in, why you’ve never been able to accept the structures of society. Those structures are claustrophobic.

They are built to regulate and define desire.

Society expresses the average of all desires.

And in this program and prophecy, society comes up short. As short as any number does, when contrasted with infinity.

You have never considered these things before. But now you do.

And you discover they are more real than rocks or buildings or planets or all the things you were quite sure made up the sum of all you desire.

Now you’re out in the open sea, where you NEVER thought you would be…

Where you ALWAYS thought you would be.

You’re there.

“Who am I building Exit From The Matrix for? I’m building it for people who know the difference between ‘doing what they’re doing’ and doing something new that is closer to their true desires. I’m building it for people who know that ‘the creative life’ is more than a phrase. I’m building it for people who know their future is unwritten and can be changed. I’m building it for people who know they want more creative power. I’m building it for people who know they are more than just a physical structure.”

“They say seeing is believing. But suppose you keep seeing the same reality? Imagination is the escape hatch: the featureless plain is suddenly populated with what you truly want.”

“In Exit From The Matrix, people will find an open universe. The engine that makes an open universe possible is imagination. This is not about giving a person advice on what to create. This is about empowering a person—through exercises he can practice on a daily basis—to imagine and invent his best future, according to his own point of view, his own decision, his own desires.”

“Unstoppable vs. On-the-Fence. Projecting your reality vs. accepting a reality someone else designed for you. Energy expressed vs. energy buried. Actor vs. spectator. Commitment drowns confusion.”

“Life reflects art. The artist was the one who first invented the space and time of his reality.”

“Normal people keep waiting for a signal. They don’t know what it is or what it will tell them to do, but they wait.”

“There is a light on in the tower. A person moves toward it. The closer he comes, the more he realizes he is misinterpreting it. What is his mistake? He keeps moving toward the light in the tower. Now he sees the light and the tower are a painting. Now he sees he made the painting. Now he sees he is a painter.”

“The architect designs a plaza of buildings. When the whole construction is built, he stares at it and knows the spaces between the buildings wouldn’t be there unless he had designed the buildings and the plaza. Space can be changed. Space can be made. That’s not found in any physics book.”

“A person knows what he knows. But somewhere in the middle of what he knows, he sees a big hole. There it is. He understands that what he knows doesn’t go in that hole. What goes in that hole is something he creates. So he creates something big there in the hole. And after that…everything he knows is transformed. It will never be the same.”

These are notes I wrote in preparing my collection, Exit From The Matrix, which contains dozens of imagination exercises designed to increase individual creative power:

“In a passive human, the cartels of the world become the cartels of the mind.”

“If you could walk into a person’s mind, as if it were a post office, and if you could get rid of every letter and package that extolled, or surrendered to, The Group, you would see that person rise to a new height.  You would see a renewal on a grand scale.”

“A struggle continues to live.  It lives in the hidden places of every individual who wants out, who wants to come back to himself, who wants to stride out on a stage.  Freedom and power again.  The shattering of amnesia.  In this stolen world,  a new stage play, titled: The Extinct Individual Returns.  In this new play, dominoes of the collective begin to fall.  The rotting structure collapses, a wing here and a wing there.  The vast sticky web called ‘the people’ begins to disintegrate.  The pseudo-scientific plot to make humans pieces on the grand chessboard, biological machines to manipulate at will, with ‘inputs’ that ‘elicit predictable responses’—this great plan and great deception eventually becomes a burnt cinder in the annals of failed histories.”

“A person breaks through his patterns when he stops buying the products he always buys.  He buys a new product.  And the best product is an idea.  The best idea is one that imposes no sharp boundaries.  Instead, it liberates the mind.  The mind can now consider options it never entertained before.  The lights go on in territories that had never been explored.”

“Imagination decimates restrictive human programming.  With imagination, you aren’t buying a story; you’re inventing countless numbers of stories.  But this invention isn’t just aimless ruminating—you create something new, you express something new, and you propel it into the world.”

My three Matrix collections

My collections, The Matrix Revealed, Exit From The Matrix, and Power Outside The Matrix, are the result of decades of research.

Here are several overarching concepts that are explored in great depth in these three collections:

The Matrix is an embrace between the human mind and the physical world, and this embrace is so complete that it imprisons the mind.

Mind freedom involves, first, an understanding about how the prison is built and functions.

Then, a person needs to understand the basics of logic and rational analysis, in order to escape the mental traps that keep him pinned to an “informational trance.”

A person can access and employ his own imagination, through the practice of techniques (included in Exit From The Matrix), in order to then invent new realities of his own choosing, in the world.  The result of this experience is far-reaching.

The three Matrix collections are the equivalent of a PhD program, or what would be a PhD program in a sane world.  The collections are all about empowerment of the individual.  They are also about liberation from the entanglements of false realities of the mind.

I would never have undertaken the work of my website, nomorefakenews, 16 years ago, if I hadn’t known the bottom line would be these Matrix collections.  I don’t inform and educate for the purpose of inducing paralysis—the point of my work is empowerment.

Yes, groups can achieve worthwhile objectives.  But it all comes back to the individual, his consciousness, his freedom, his power, his creativity—the launching points for a better life and a better world.

“Consciousness wants to create new consciousness, and it can. Imagination is how it does it. If there were some ultimate state of consciousness, imagination would always be able to play another card and take it further.”

“If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, we’ve flattered reality enough. It doesn’t need any more. Reality needs a massive injection of imagination.”

“Imagination can be used to invent a better shade of nail polish or a universe. In a society devoted to nail polish, imagination is not to blame.”

“Imagination has extraordinary equanimity. It is just as happy to entertain and embody two conflicting realities as it is to spool out one uniform reality.”

“What feeds back to you from the product of your imagination is far less important than the fact that you imagined it. People love to ensnare themselves in what they have imagined. They try to inject meaning into it, so much meaning that they become tied up in useless interpretations. They are the ‘product people’. Dreams, paintings, collections of ideas and thoughts—they are obsessed with what they have invented. Just look at what you’ve created it, enjoy it, revel in it, and go on to create something else. This is the path.”

“You can imagine a cosmos that is a forgery of, and a substitute for, the individual. In fact, historically, people have done that on a continuous basis. It’s called organized religion.”

“New space and time appear when a person contemplates doing something he really wants to do.”

“The greatest thing in the world is doing what you really want to do. Once you start, all sorts of implications and ripples and consequences develop. You even begin to imagine new branches on that tree. The tree gets bigger. There are no limits.”

“The self plus imagination plus commitment to action is a force that, in the long run, can never be defeated.”

“What is a goal? It’s really doing more and more of what you want to do. How you organize it and define it are secondary.”

“Everybody knows that time changes when you’re absorbed in doing what you really want to do. But how many people realize that’s a revision of time itself? Time is a function of doing what you want to do.”

“Finding a new goal, a new direction isn’t all that hard. Committing to it and acting on it is a different matter. If you want to achieve the goal, think of the alternative: doing nothing. Acting on a new goal has nothing to do with perfection. Perfection as a prerequisite is a waste of time. It’s also likely to be just one more way of postponing action.”

“Goals don’t have to be described with exact clarity at the outset. As you take action, things will become clearer, things will develop. For example, if your goal is to write, then write. Later on, you can decide what kind of writing you want to do. You may discover you want to do five different kinds of writing.”

“When a person has a problem, the question is, in what context does the problem exist? If there is no context, then the person has lost sight of what he wants to do in life.”

“Knowing what you want to do, and doing it, creates a perspective from which problems are manageable.”

“I’ve known people who have swung into action on a goal…and then later, in the midst of their action, they discovered a larger purpose. If they weren’t taking action, they never would have discovered the new purpose.”

“What holds a person back? He perceives he has a problem. But he has no larger context in which he can view the problem.”

“Does a person want to get ahead and advance along a certain line or doesn’t he? If not, he’s in a muddle. The muddle looks like a problem. He produces excuses. The answer is always reaching out into the world with action. His imagination is telling him that all the time, but he isn’t listening.”

“Why do people give up? Because they want to.”

“Why do people strive to create something they desire in the world? Because they want to.”

“Why do people occupy a middle ground between these two choices? Because they want to.”

“Fortunately, a person can change his mind about what he wants. And then, in a second, everything changes. Imagination is the key. He imagines something new and he says, ‘That’s it. That’s what I want’.”

“Excessive organization of the mind obstructs creativity.”

“A creative future is dynamic. Excessive organization blocks that, in the same way that a bureaucracy stifles innovation with volumes of regulations and restrictions.”

“The bureaucratic mind is complacent. Nothing interesting and adventurous is going to happen. Exciting possibilities are going to be filtered through a maze of rules and ultimately discarded.”

“The moment of change and insight is the moment when the individual sees he can create his own future. At that instant, the bureaucracy of the mind is suspended without pay.”

“The mental bureaucracy starts out as an impulse to maintain security. But ‘protecting one’s future from harm’ eventually becomes so extensive an operation that the future itself dissolves. There is no future. There is only the present, repeating itself.”

“The sign that a bureaucracy of the mind has taken over? The individual keeps shrinking his aims and desires.”

“Eventually, every large bureaucracy is maintained to protect special interests. A bureaucracy of the mind protects the individual from exploring his deepest desires.”

“The movement called Surrealism took apart the bureaucracy of the mind. Surrealism was, of course, too much for most people. They recoiled in fear and loathing. They saw their own ‘apparatus’ being dismantled.”

“Space and time are functions of imagination. It’s not the other way around.”

“Before it was corrupted and altered and organized, the purpose of original Zen was dissolving the bureaucracy of the mind.”

“Logic and imagination aren’t opposites. The complement each other. Logic is all about learning how to walk on the ground. Imagination is about flying.”

“Independent I plus independent I can make a powerful We. But bureaucratic I plus bureaucratic I makes a blind structure.”

“No problem is ever solved by shrinking your vision of the future you want. The problem just festers across the mind’s bureaucracy, and the buck is passed from department to department.”

“Most people are consumed by, or surrender to, organization as the first order of business. That’s backwards. What is the proper degree of organization? The minimum required to implement the vision of what the individual most deeply desires. Anything beyond that is self-fulfilling obstruction.”

“As in government, the bureaucracy of the mind wants to control the range of possible solutions to a problem. No solution must create blowback on the bureaucracy—which is to say, no solution must expose the bureaucracy’s workings as counter-productive and utterly conventional and useless.”

“The origin of power is in the imagination.”
